The Dubai Gem Private School consists of a large open space in its centre, which is surrounded by the different academic blocks and administration offices. The school that started as a nursery back in 1973 has shifted its nursery and FS1 classes to Al Hudaiba. • COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory for students and staff members. Employees eligible for the vaccine but who are not interested will have to submit a negative PCR test result every week. Unlike schools in Abu Dhabi, students are not obliged to submit negative PCR test results.
• All students must physically return to school by October 3. The remote learning programme will be offered to students that show a relevant medical certificate issued by the Dubai Health Authority. Schools can switch to distance learning if a positive COVID-19 case is identified.
• Parents can now pick up and drop off their children from the classroom if the school allows. However, schools should ensure that parents do not have access to other facilities on campus.
• Moreover, KHDA has reduced the minimum physical distance to 1 metre. However, schools should continue to take precautions by maintaining a safe distance. Staff members and students above six years old should wear a mask at all times.
• Schools are now allowed to conduct swimming and sports lessons, holiday camps, extracurricular activities, after-school clubs and catering services under strict health and safety measures. Schools must clean and sanitise the changing and sports areas after each group of children.
• Students are asked to enter the specific gates wearing facemasks. The school has to check their temperatures at the entry points. Students with body temperatures over 37.5-degree centigrade are not allowed to enter. They will be sent home with their parents.

Dubai Gem Private School is an all-round school, which offers education from Nursery to Year 13. The Nursery and Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) classes are held on the new campus in Al Hudaiba. The Oud Metha campus provides education from Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) until Year 13. Children aged 4 to 5 years are welcomed in FS2.

Foundation Stage

The school follows an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework in FS1 and FS2. This framework allows the school to target seven key areas of learning:

Dubai Gem Private School follows the UK National Curriculum, which offers a more holistic learning experience. As per the new COVID-19 protocols issued by KHDA, schools are discontinuing the distance learning programme from October 3, 2021. Those wishing to continue their education via distance learning have to show a relevant health certificate issued by Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Schools may revert back to distance learning if COVID-19 cases are detected in a class or a group in a class.

KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority is a governmental body that ensures the quality of education offered by private schools in Dubai remains high. KHDA attempts to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of schools in their annual inspections to ensure that they meet the highest quality standards. KHDA rates schools based on a six-point scale: outstanding, very good, good, acceptable, weak and very weak.

Like many British schools in Dubai, the academic year for Dubai Gem Private School starts in August and ends in July. They split the academic activities into three terms: winter, spring and summer.

• The winter term in this school typically starts in the last week of August and ends in the second week of December. Students expect a mid-term break in the fourth week of October.
• A three-week winter vacation separates the spring term that starts in the first week of January and ends in the fourth week of March. The midterm break for the second term is usually expected in the fourth week of February.
• After a three-week spring break, the summer term commences from the second week of April and concludes in the first week of July.

The admission process in Dubai Gem Private School involves filling an online application form and submitting it with the required documents. The required documents for registration include the following:

• A copy of child’s and parents’ passports with UAE entry stamp or residency visa
• A copy of the Emirates ID of the candidate and both parents
• Copies of the last two years of academic records (for year 1 and above)
• Pre-registration fee (non-refundable)

Once all the documents are submitted, the school will contact parents for the entrance test or interview depending upon the grade for admission. The school conducts an oral assessment for admission in FS2 while written assessments for Grade 1 and above. English and math are part of the written assessment for Grade 1. Assessment for Grade 2 includes English, maths and other CAT4 requirements. Assessment for Grade 4 to Grade 9 includes English, math, CAT4 and NGRT. An entrance test is usually conducted in April or May. Interviews for AS-Levels are conducted in August.

The documents to be submitted for SEND admissions are:

• AED 750 as registration fee (non-refundable)
• Five recent passport-size photographs
• Two copies of passport and visa of students and parents
• Two copies of Emirates ID of students and parents
• Two copies of the immunisation card
• Original passport and birth certificate for verification (need to be attested for some countries)
• Copy of latest mark sheet
• School leaving certificate

Those coming from schools in Dubai do not need to get their certificates attested. Students applying from schools in emirates other than Dubai need to get their transfer certificates attested by the Education board of that zone. Those coming from Arabian and other countries (non-GCC) should get their certificates attested by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UAE consulate in that country. Those coming from schools in UK, USA, Canada and Australia need to get their certificates and letter attested by the previous school. Those applying from schools in Qatar do not need attestation; however, they need KHDA’s approval for admission in DGPS.

The school has a canteen that provides healthy and nutritious snack and lunch options to children. Both hot and cold food options are available for students.
