All you need to know about overstay fines in the UAE
The UAE is a multicultural country that welcomes tourists, families and professionals from across the world. Overstay fines in the UAE are enforced by the government to support the well-regulated visa system and ensure that all residents and visitors are legally allowed to stay here.
Residents who relocate must follow a certain set of rules for expats in Dubai to ensure legal compliance. At the end of the day, these rules are for the benefit of the public and to ensure high levels of safety and security. Many overstay fines in Dubai, and the rest of the UAE have also been set up to facilitate this goal.
GENERAL RULES AGAINST OVERSTAYING IN THE UAE
The UAE welcomes foreigners from all parts of the world for tourism and business. The only requirement for them is to stay within the confines of the law of the land. People who stay longer than their visa period must pay overstay fines in the UAE.
What happens if I overstay my UAE visa is a common question that several expat residents ask. Well, overstaying in any foreign country is a punishable crime. And different countries deal with such cases differently.
OVERSTAY FINES IN THE UAE
Whether you are in the UAE on a short-term tourist visa or a long-term residence visa, it is important to remember the date when your visa ends. Remember, you must apply for a renewal or modification before the cut-off date. If you fail to do so, you will have to pay penalties. Here’s how you can renew tourist visa Dubai.
Earlier, fines depended on the type of visa the offender had held. However, as per the visa system changes that came into effect in October 2022, the fine for overstaying has been standardized regardless of the visa type.
So, whether you have a tourist visa or a residency visa, the overstay fine in the UAE is AED 50 per day. This new system unifies the fine amount for any violators. Any days used to request documents or update information are included in the fine.
Residency visa holders have a grace period of between 60 and 180 days after visa cancellation to change their status or leave the UAE, depending on their circumstances. They can be arrested for overstaying beyond this period.
Visa Type | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation |
---|---|
Visa Type Golden Visa holders and family members | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 180 days |
Visa Type Green Visa holders and family members | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 180 days |
Visa Type Widows or divorcees | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 180 days |
Visa Type Students who graduated | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 180 days |
Visa Type First and second level skilled professionals (MOHRE) | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 180 days |
Visa Type Third level skilled professionals (MOHRE) | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 90 days |
Visa Type Property owners | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 90 days |
Visa Type Normal residency visa | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 60 days |
Visa Type Other categories | Grace Period After Visa Cancellation 30 days |
In terms of a visit visa, the grace period was 10 days, previously. However, that relaxation is no longer offered and a fine of AED 50 is incurred now the day your visa ends.
Please remember that the UAE visa overstay fine and the grace period after visa cancellation depend on the visa type.
In case a renewal application has been made, but the right documents have not been uploaded within a period of 30 days or the applicant uploads the wrong documents more than three times, the renewal request will be cancelled, and a new application has to be made.
