Dubai is one of the world’s prime culinary hotspots. The emirate boasts an overwhelmingly diverse dining culture where a multitude of restaurants are the recipients of the prestigious Michelin star.
This year, Michelin has returned to Dubai with its second edition. Spanning an eclectic range of cuisines, from classic French fare to fine-dining Chinese, Dubai’s starry establishments are the buzz of the city right now. So get ready for a culinary adventure as we tell you all about the Michelin Guide Dubai and the restaurants that have received the prestigious accolade in 2023.
ABOUT THE MICHELIN GUIDE
Michelin Guides are a series of guidebooks published by the French tyre company Michelin. Initiated in 1904, the guide grants up to three Michelin Stars to restaurants that excel in their quality of food and service. It is a tremendous honour for any establishment to be selected for the award. You can call it the “Oscars” of the culinary industry.
The guide covers various cities across North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Europe. Dubai is the 36th culinary destination on the Michelin Guide.
WHAT IS A MICHELIN STAR?
There are three types of Michelin Stars, with the 3rd being the highest. Each Star represents a certain standard of quality and experience offered by the restaurant. Here’s what these Stars signify:
- One Michelin Star represents food worth stopping for
- Two Michelin Stars represent food worth taking a detour
- Three Michelin Stars represent food worth travelling for
MICHELIN GUIDE DUBAI
Dubai’s remarkable diversity is reflected not just in the architectural marvels but also in its gastronomic scene. The emirate is home to countless outstanding restaurants led by world-renowned chefs serving a variety of cuisines. Michelin Guide Dubai offers a fresh insight into Dubai’s multi-cultural culinary offerings.
The announcement for the Michelin Guide launch in Dubai was made at the Museum of the Future on 28th March 2022. That’s when the Michelin inspectors began visiting and ranking restaurants across the emirate, according to Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides.
This is what Poullennec said about Michelin’s Dubai edition:
“We will be showcasing the best of Dubai’s gastronomy, to reflect not just the sophistication that the city is famed for, but also the wide diversity of cuisines that the city’s location and history provide.”
Michelin keeps much of its approach to awarding Stars under wraps. However, the Michelin inspectors in Dubai applied the same international standards to reward the restaurants as they do in other countries. Their long-standing five criteria for selection are as follows:
- Use of high-quality produce
- Mastery of culinary techniques and flavours
- Representation of chef’s personality in the cuisine
- Value for money provided by the restaurant
- Consistency of excellent dining experience
A total of 14 restaurants won Michelin Stars. 11 restaurants were awarded one Michelin Star and three restaurants were awarded two Michelin Stars, whilst more than a dozen achieved Bib Gourmand recognition. Additionally, three restaurants received a Green Michelin Star and multiple chefs won the special awards.
Let’s find out who made the grade!
