Dubai is famous for its iconic buildings, exciting events and its well-deserved reputation for being one of the world’s best cities for shopping. That being the case and with the exceptional popularity of gold jewellery in India, it’s no surprise that expatriates love to buy gold in Dubai and are interested in the gold limit from Dubai to India.
It’s also common for expats to convert their savings to gold as the precious metal provides a hedge against inflation. With that in mind, a few years back the Indian Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs imposed a gold import limit from Dubai to India.
So, without further ado, let’s get to our tips and guidance around how much gold you can carry from Dubai to India.
ALL ABOUT THE GOLD LIMIT FROM DUBAI TO INDIA
The lower prices and premium quality is the main reason why expats love to buy gold in Dubai. The Deira Gold Souk is one of the most popular places to buy gold in Dubai and people from different communities prefer to buy it from this iconic market in Deira.
However, over the past couple of years, restrictive custom duty by the Indian Government has affected the gold import to India from Dubai and other emirates.
DUTY-FREE ALLOWANCE

According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) website, any Indian passenger with a valid Indian passport issued under the Passport Act of 1967; who has been residing abroad for more than one year is eligible to bring gold jewellery to India in their baggage:
- Gold jewellery with an aggregate weight of 20 grams and a maximum monetary value of INR. 50,000 for male passengers is exempted from customs duty.
- Gold jewellery with an aggregate weight of 40 grams and a maximum monetary value of INR 100,000 for female passengers is exempted from customs duty.
The duty-free allowance on gold jewellery from Dubai to India applies to children as well. Provided that they have stayed in Dubai or abroad in any other country than India for over a year or more.
Indian passengers bringing gold from Dubai to India should keep in mind that the duty-free allowance is only applicable to gold jewellery. Gold in the form of bars or coins is liable for custom’s duty fees.
LIMIT ON CARRYING GOLD
If passengers travelling carry more than the allowable gold limit to India from Dubai than the aforementioned limit, they are liable to pay customs duty.
Passengers with a valid Indian passport, who have stayed in Dubai or other foreign countries for over six months, can bring in 1 KG of gold in bars or coins from Dubai to India as a checked baggage item.
However, they have to pay the custom duty fees if they exceed the gold carrying limit from Dubai to India.
In 2019, the customs duty on gold from Dubai to India increased from 10% to 12.5%.
CUSTOM DUTY
The custom duty rates for carrying gold from Dubai to India are as follows:
Description |
Customs Duty Rate |
---|---|
Description
Gold Bars |
Customs Duty Rate
INR 300 per 10 gms. + 3% Edu. Cess |
Description
Gold in other forms including coins, tola bars, ornaments |
Customs Duty Rate
INR 750 per 10 gms. + 3% Edu. Cess |
If someone carrying gold within the above-mentioned limit arrives in India from Dubai without completing a six-month stay, the person will be eligible to pay additional duty of 36.05%.
EXCEEDING THE MAXIMUM GOLD LIMIT

According to the UAE Embassy website, when travelling to India, the maximum gold allowed from Dubai to India should not exceed 10kgs per passenger. It includes the entire weight of the gold a passenger is carrying, including ornaments.
Customs duty on coins and bars more than 1kg is 36.05%. So even though this larger limit may be allowed, it’s fairly uncommon to see people taking gold in amounts exceeding 1kg.
CONDITIONS FOR IMPORTING ABOVE THE LIMIT
- The customs duty on all excess gold shall be paid in convertible foreign currency.
- Passengers must provide all necessary proof of purchase and other documentation to avoid the seizure of goods at the airport.
- Failing to meet the strict requirements and declaration may lead to detention, prosecution or confiscation until all paperwork and documentation are complete.
- The gold bars must have all the necessary inscriptions. The information has to include the total weight, manufacturer, serial number.
- A major condition for importing gold above 1 KG is that the passenger should not have brought any gold or other precious metals and gemstones to India in the last six months, exceeding the maximum gold limit from Dubai to India.
- During the short visits to the country, the passenger has not availed any form of exemption from paying customs duty on gold in India.
- Gold jewellery studded with expensive gemstones and pearls is not allowed to be imported to India.
- A passenger has to bring the gold as a piece of checked baggage, or the other option is to import the gold within fifteen days of their arrival in India as unaccompanied baggage.
- The passenger can obtain the permitted quantity of gold from the Customs bonded warehouse of the State Bank of India and Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation.
- The passenger must file a detailed declaration in a prescribed form before the Customs officer upon their arrival in India.
- The passenger must state their intention to obtain gold from the customs bonded warehouse and pay the customs duty before the clearance.
When it comes to the gold limit from Dubai to India, it’s always essential to be aware of the latest customs policies. Makes sure to go through the Dubai Airport banned items list before travelling back home or arriving in Dubai from your home country. The restrictions are in place to discourage gold smuggling in the country and improve the economic deficit.
Also, the Indian Central Board of Excise and Customs aims to develop a new set of customs gold limit for India to facilitate passengers better. When finalised, the new guidelines will ease custom clearance for travellers bringing gold from Dubai and other countries to India.

1. INR 300 per 10 gms. + 3% Edu. Cess for solid gold bars

Dear Sir
I am resident in dubai for 20 years
And I am self employed
How many grams gold i can take to India without customs duty
And what are the charges if I am bringing more than my limit?
Hi Thank you for reaching out to MyBayut.
According to the rules and regulations of Indian Customs passengers with a valid Indian passport who have stayed in Dubai or other foreign countries for over six months, are allowed to bring in 1 KG of gold in bars or coins from Dubai to India as a checked baggage item, however, passengers are required to pay the custom duty fees if they exceed the gold carrying limit from Dubai to India.
If your limit exceeds the aforementioned limits then you are liable to pay the following charges which could change depending on the nature of the gold, your stay in Dubai and other details provided by the customs officials. The charges are:
1. INR 300 per 10 gms. + 3% Edu. Cess for solid gold bars
2. INR 750 per 10 gms. + 3% Edu. Cess Gold in other forms including coins, tola bars, ornaments
3. If someone carrying gold within the above-mentioned limit of 1 KG, arrives in India from Dubai without completing a six-month stay, the person will be eligible to pay additional duty of 36.05%.
Enquire about the limits of bringing gold to India from the customs officials.
Good luck
