The British International School Abu Dhabi educates students aged 3 to 18 years old. Students are classified into the following phases of education:
Educational Stage | Year |
---|---|
Foundation School | FS1 and FS2 |
Primary School | Year 1 to Year 6 |
Secondary School | Year 7 to Year 11 |
High School | Year 12 and Year 13 |
The school’s educational programme revolves around the UK National Curriculum. It is a well-recognised curriculum accepted throughout the world for its focus on updated knowledge, international education and balance between academic and non-academic activities. It split the education programme into Early Education, KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and sixth-form education. In the sixth form, the school follows the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP). The programme specifically focuses on delivering practical, work-based knowledge. The specifics for each phase of education at this school are:
Foundation Stage is one of the most crucial stages in the life of a student. In this stage, young learners are introduced to school where they learn how things work and how the world operates. British International School uses a non-formal teaching and learning approach to develop young minds.
It adopts the Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework to educate children. The EYFS framework is a widely recognised educational framework used in many British and non-British schools throughout the world. It is based on non-formal teaching approaches where children learn via the ‘play and learn’ strategy. It maximises the benefits of the EYFS framework by using specially designed playgrounds for foundation stage students. The school has modified the EYFS framework with modern teaching strategies to meet the needs of students.
The British International School targets the development of students in the following seven areas of learning:
Language and Communication | Expressive Arts and Design |
Personal, Emotional and Social Development | Literacy |
Understanding the World | Numeracy |
Physical Development |
These areas of learning are fundamental to the EYFS Framework, ensuring that students are equipped with skills for subsequent phases of education. Teachers play a crucial role in this stage as they attempt to link the seven key areas of learning with real-life examples and settings. The school does this by regularly arranging field trips and outside-the-classroom activities.
In the Foundation Stage, a classroom has a maximum of 20 students that are taught by a teacher and two support assistants.
The primary school curriculum is split into KS1 and KS2.
Students completing their early education enter Key Stage 1. It is the first stage of the primary phase where students are introduced to a more formal teaching and learning approach. From KS1, the school follows the National Curriculum of England. The KS1 educational programme is specifically designed to spark students’ interest in learning and ensure a smooth transition to the primary stage.
The school uses various literacy and numeracy tools that help teachers reinforce concepts. Teachers focus on using the inquisitive nature of children to help them explore the world. This helps students explore things on their own, ask questions in classrooms and link them with the taught lessons to build their concepts.
At this stage, the school specifically focuses on the physical development of students. Therefore, the school introduced students in Year 1 and Year 2 to gymnastics and team games.
In the KS1, British International School supports students’ learning through the following activities:
Art projects | Visitor |
Field Trips | Theme Weeks |
After successfully clearing Year 2, students enter Key Stage 2.
At this stage, the British International School Abu Dhabi focuses on building students’ independent learning skills, reflection and self-assessment skills. It is an enjoyable time for students as they grasp a deeper understanding of concepts. It is the continuation of the National Curriculum of England, where students are engaged in many academic and non-academic activities. The school uses its outstanding campus facilities to ensure students have the best learning experience.
Subjects taught to students from Year 3 to Year 6 are:
Language | Drama |
Physical, Social and Health Education | Art |
Physical Education | Music |
Humanities | Science |
Mathematics | Information and Communication Technology (ICT) |
English (Handwriting, Listening, Reading and Literature) |
Besides regular classroom activities, students also participate in a range of age-appropriate extra-curricular activities. They are often found celebrating theme days where they spend a day as Romans or cook a delicious meal. Moreover, students take part in a range of sports activities. Students with excellent grasps of mathematical concepts also take part in local and international competitions.
Secondary Stage encompasses Key Stage 3 (KS3) and Key Stage 4 (KS4) stages.
Key Stage 3 marks the start of secondary education. At this stage, the school focuses on building critical thinking, active learning and superior communication skills. It follows the National Curriculum of England for KS3. British International School encourages children to participate in inter-school, local and international debating competitions. Such competitions result in self-confident individuals that understand the impact of global problems and provide solutions.
Another key feature of the KS3 curriculum is the introduction of a Virtual Learning Platform (Moodle). Moodle is an open-source learning platform used around the world to manage students’ learning. Here, students can access the lectures, learning materials, assessment requirements, etc. to help them in their learning. Students of BIS Abu Dhabi have to complete various global classroom projects in science, creative writing, dance, mathematics and arts.
The subjects taught to students in KS3 are:
Arabic | French |

English | Business Studies |
Media | Mathematics |
Arts | Economics |
ICT | Physical Education (PE) |

The school improves the students’ experience by using high-end school facilities and arranging extra-curricular activities, competitions and field trips.
The school continues to follow the British National Curriculum in KS4. It has designed the educational programme for Year 10 and Year 11 in a way to prepare students for their IGCSE examinations. The KS4 curriculum provides an opportunity for students to strengthen their literacy and language-related skills. In the sixth form stage, the school follows the IBDP. It is a highly advanced educational programme managed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). IBDP aims to foster caring and knowledge students with superior academic skills. It is a widely recognised post-16 educational programme focusing on developing social and leadership skills. There are three cores of the IB DP programme:
Each student has to undergo the aforementioned three cores of IB DP to be eligible for the diploma. The theory of knowledge helps students to work on their reasoning and critical thinking skills. Students also complete a 4000-word extended essay, which enables them with researching and evaluation skills. The CAS core value prepares the social, leadership and organisation skills of students.
Students studying IB DP as their post-16 qualification are introduced to a wide range of subjects. The subjects available for students in Year 12 and Year 13 are:
