All about Indian passport renewal in Dubai
Is it time to renew your Indian passport in Dubai? The good news is that the Indian Embassy’s Passport Seva service has streamlined and simplified the process. So, if your passport is nearing its expiry date, continue reading as we discuss the process of renewal of Indian passport in Dubai.
PROCESS OF RENEWAL OF INDIAN PASSPORT IN DUBAI
From 28th October 2025, all new and renewed Indian passports including those processed in Dubai are being issued as electronic passports (e-passports). Existing passports will remain valid until their expiry dates.
The Government of India introduced e-passports to make international travel more secure, efficient and globally compatible. This initiative enhances passport security, speeds up immigration checks and ensures that Indian citizens enjoy a smoother travel experience worldwide.
The printed details on the passport match exactly with the data in the chip, making duplication or tampering almost impossible.
E-passports can be easily recognised by a symbol on the cover. When scanned at airports, this chip allows for quicker verification of the traveller’s identity, helping reduce queues and making international travel smoother and safer.
Eligibility for E-Passport for Indian Citizens in Dubai
For those who wish to know how to renew Indian passport in Dubai? Its essential to understand the requirements and eligibility criteria. At present, any Indian citizen who qualifies for a regular passport can apply for an e-passport. The service is gradually being rolled out across India and Indian missions abroad.
For Indian residents in Dubai, this means that from 28th October 2025, all new or renewed passports will automatically be issued as e-passports. The process of applying remains unchanged. Applications must still be submitted online via the Passport Seva 2.0 portal, followed by document submission at the BLS International Centre.
Existing passports will remain valid until their expiry dates. However, all new issues and renewals through the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General of India in Dubai will now be processed as e-passports.
The initial application has to be submitted on the Passport Seva 2.0 portal. After the submission of the application, for further processing, the Indian government has hired the services of BLS International Service Centre for visa and passport-related matters.
The organisation collects the fees, documents and applications for passport and visa services, whereas the processing is done by the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate General of India in Dubai.
WHAT IS AN E-PASSPORT?
To enhance safety protocols, a combined paper and electronic passport will be issued by the government. It will have a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna. At immigration, the passport holder’s data will be retrieved and verified.
An e-passport looks almost identical to the traditional one but includes a small electronic chip embedded in the back cover. This chip securely stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric data that includes fingerprints, facial recognition details and a digital signature.
