All you need to know about the Dubai Metro e-scooter ban
If you are used to travelling on Dubai Metro with your e-scooter, your plans will be changing moving forward. On February 29th, 2024, the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) announced a Dubai Metro scooter ban. This e-scooter ban encompasses both the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram. In this article, we detail the ban and the safety reasons that led to its instigation.
ALL ABOUT THE DUBAI METRO SCOOTER BAN
In the past three to four years, the usage of e-scooters in Dubai has increased significantly. The government has limited their use in certain areas and come up with a set of rules to ensure safety of the pedestrians as well as the e-scooter riders.
Many commuters utilise e-scooters on a daily basis, riding them to the Metro station, folding the scooter and carrying them aboard. This allows them to quickly navigate their journeys to and from the station. There are some areas in Dubai which aren’t immediately in the vicinity of a Metro or Tram station. For those residing in these localities, e-scooters offered a cheap mode of transport to reach the nearest station.
However, this is no longer possible subsequent to the e-scooter ban inside Metro in Dubai. RTA has cited safety concerns for passengers and made the announcement via X (formerly Twitter). The ban took effect from the 1st March 2024.
The e-scooter ban inside the Dubai Metro doesn’t apply to footbridges. Riders can still fold their e-scooter and carry it across footbridges inside a Dubai Metro station.
The announcement of ‘RTA bans e-scooters on Dubai Metro‘ comes soon after a lengthy delay at Onpassive Metro Station caused by smoke emanating from an electric scooter. The e-scooter ban inside metro is a swift response to this troubling incident to ensure the safety of passengers.
RTA has further announced that robots will be trialled to monitor violations of soft mobility services. This will include violations linked to e-scooters and bikes in Dubai.
