UAE single-use plastic ban 2025
Plastic waste is one of the primary concerns regarding sustainability. Governments around the world are working on ways to phase out single-use plastic bags. The UAE government announced a significant policy change, banning single-use plastic bags in 2024. As of January 1, 2025, plastic bags of any composition or material have been prohibited. This includes the import, production and circulation of plastic shopping bags.
Furthermore, as of January 1, 2026, the import of boxes, plastic cutlery, and styrofoam will also be banned. The plastic-containing items that are likely to be banned include plastic bottles and cups, cotton swabs, wet wipes, plastic cutlery and certain types of food packaging.
Authorities, suppliers, retailers and consumers will already be busy preparing for these changes and will undoubtedly work together to source suitable, sustainable and multi-use alternatives.
UAE PLASTIC BAG BAN: A STEP FORWARD TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE EMIRATES
Earlier, the Dubai government had imposed a 25-fil fee on the use of plastic bags and in Abu Dhabi, most plastic bags were banned. The Abu Dhabi government also introduced an Incentive-based Bottle Return Scheme to reduce plastic waste.
Similarly, Sharjah has also announced a ban on plastic bags, effective from the start of 2024. According to the ban, retailers were required to halt trading, production, offering and importing single-use plastic bags. Umm Al Quwain instigated a blanket ban on single-use plastic bags. These initiatives work as part of the UAE government’s plastic policy.
These efforts have already had a massive impact. For instance, in the capital city, there has been a reduction of 87 million single-use plastic bags, equivalent to a 90% drop.

The UAE government’s plastic policy has been implemented in phases. Here’s the UAE plastic ban timeline.
- January 2024: A 25-fil charge on the use of single-use plastic bags.
- June 2024: The UAE initiates a ban on single-use plastics.
- January 2025: Ban on items such as Styrofoam containers, plastic stirrers and plastic straws.
- January 2026: The ban will be extended to plastic products, including plastic cups and lids, cutlery, food containers and plates.

- Roll bags for vegetables, chicken, fish and meat
- Bags that are 58 micrometres thick and above
