Duke of Edinburgh International Award Scheme

It is a non-competitive and internationally recognised programme focused on the personal and social development of participants. The main feature of this award is the flexible nature of activities. Students can choose activities based on their interests, and each activity usually takes one hour per week. Bronze, silver and gold are three different levels based on the length, difficulty and minimum age requirements.

Bronze

Bronze is the easiest level of this award programme that takes at least 6 months to complete and is split into two segments. The minimum age requirement is 14 years. In the first segment, participants are involved in a range of skills, volunteering and physical activities for 3 months. They also have to spend an extra 3 months on any of the aforementioned sections. There is also an expedition trip of 2 days and 1 night.

Silver

It is a 6-month programme for bronze award holders. For others, it takes at least 12 months to complete. Participants must be at least 15 years old to start this level. Non-bronze holders further need to complete their 6 months in either skill, physical or volunteering section. Each participant also needs to take part in a 3-day and 2-night expedition trip to complete this level.

Gold

The toughest level of the Duke of Edinburgh award programme is the Gold level. It takes at least 18 months for a beginner and 12 months for silver award holders. Those who are at least 16 years old take part in physical, volunteering and skill sections of the programme for 12 months. Non-silver holders further need to spend 6 months on either physical, volunteering or skill-related activities. At this level, each participant needs to complete a 4-day and 3-night expedition trip and a 5-day and 4-nights residential project to be eligible for the Gold award.

Mode of Communication between Teachers and Parents

GEMS Parents Portal

One of the primary sources of communication at JC is the GEMS Parent Portal. It informs parents about important information such as attendance records, teachers’ feedback, examination schedule, notifications for upcoming events and students’ performance.

GEMS Parental Engagement Programme

Jumeirah College focuses on helping all of its students reach their maximum potential. This is the main reason why the GEMS schools have introduced the GEMS Parental Engagement Programme into all of its schools. This provides parents with the opportunity to engage with the learning and development of their children. Moreover, it also helps them to develop an improved understanding of strategies for interaction and engagement, fulfilling the learning needs of their child.

Almost every GEMS school has been able to develop its engagement programme to fulfil the specific requirements of its community. However, there are basic requirements that are expected from every GEMS school. This includes:

  • Recognition of the important role played by parents within the process of learning and teaching;
  • Informing parents about the student-based study programmes in advance
  • Providing the necessary resources, tools, and guidance required by parents to support the learning and development of the child.

Three-a-day parental engagement approach

JC’s 3-a-day mobile application is one of the most essential ways through which the college has been helping parents to provide inspiration and encouragement to children. The application has been developed based on simple and pragmatic advice from counsellors and teachers. It includes three important sections:

  • Activities to share
  • Something to talk about
  • Guidance for encouraging children

D6 Communicator app

Parents can also gain information through the D6 communicator app. It is a standalone mobile application that provides valuable information to parents such as news, photos, calendar and other information.
