International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi Curriculum

At ISC Abu Dhabi, the school follows the SABIS Education Programme. It is an exclusive curriculum practised by SABIS schools throughout the world. SABIS curriculum is an internationally recognised educational programme that is academically rigorous and challenging for students. It focuses more on the academic development of students. However, the school has made modifications to support the non-academic needs of students. ISC Abu Dhabi considers its education system as a dynamic production team, each participant playing its role in students’ development. The faculty members, including the teaching staff, self-audit their role in educating children.

The SABIS curriculum has existed for over 135 years and has been modified to incorporate new learning methodologies. The school specifies daily learning goals for each grade at ISC Abu Dhabi. From KG1 onwards, students complete a series of learning objectives assigned to each grade. It is further supported by SABIS AMS, SABIS Textbooks and extended learning materials. The approach to student learning is based on a highly structured three-step process.

The first step in educating through the SABIS curriculum is the teaching phase. In this phase, teachers deliver updated lectures via interactive whiteboards and or any other ICT facilities available within the classrooms. Teachers further support the delivered lectures through individualised assignments, oral tasks and collaborative works.

This is followed by the second step of the process, which is known as testing and monitoring. In this process, teachers evaluate the understanding of students via written assignments. The assessment allows the teachers to understand the effectiveness of lectures and changes necessary for improved learning.

The last step of the SABIS Education System, students’ follow up, deals with peers reviewing each other’s work.

Besides, the school has special academic support programmes for students with weak academic skills. These programmes are offered to students at the time of admission and are charged separately. Summer School is the first special academic support programme that lasts for six weeks. It is usually offered from June to August and helps in bridging the skill gap of students before the start of a new academic year. The other support programme, special lessons, is offered to students that are weak in one subject. The programme completes when the child reaches the skill level of his or her peers.

The SABIS Student Life Organisation (SLO) is a key pillar of the SABIS Educational Programme. It allows the school to offer real-life experiences to students. Consequently, it results in the development of the following 21st century skills:

Leadership
Problem-Solving
Sociability
Critical Thinking
Organisation
Grit and Resilience
Independence
Empathy and Tolerance
Communication Skills
Collaboration
Teamwork
Accountability

Those in the high school stage studying for the SABIS High School Diploma must pass at least five subjects in addition to Arabic and Islamic Studies as mandated by the Ministry of Education (MOE). ADEK Rating

The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) is a governmental entity regulating the education sector of Abu Dhabi. It was established in 2005 to regulate the education sector of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra regions. For this purpose, ADEK follows the Irtiqaa Programme, which allows it to inspect the performances of schools every 18 to 24 months. Afterwards, it issues a detailed report based on strengths and weaknesses. The rating is done following a six-point rating scale that varies from outstanding (best) to very weak (worst) rating. ADEK evaluates schools’ performance by considering the following six performance standards:

  • Students’ Achievements
  • Students’ Personal and Emotional Development, and Innovation skills
  • Teaching and Assessment
  • Curriculum
  • Leadership and Management
  • Protection, Care, Guidance and Support of Students
ADEK school ratings
ADEK school ratings explained

In its latest inspection report for the year 2019-2020, ADEK rated the performance of ISC Abu Dhabi as Good. There is an improvement in its overall rating as it was rated acceptable in the previous inspection. ADEK observed improvements in students’ achievement, leadership and management, teaching and assessment and curriculum. Whereas, the performance standards for students’ personal achievement and innovation and protection and care remain the same.

The key areas of strengths for the International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi are:

  • Commendable students’ attainment in the high school examination. Moreover, the overall achievement of students in English, Arabic as a First Language (AFL), science, mathematics, IT, PE and French is also a strength of ISC Abu Dhabi.
  • Students make their best effort due to the overall consistency in the quality of teaching.
  • Students’ behaviour and attitude, understanding of UAE culture and heritage, and respect for Islamic values are also the strength of this school.
  • The school also provide quality provisions for support, guidance and care.
  • The school’s leadership, in particular the director of the school, plays an important role in improving the standards of the school.

ADEK also highlighted some weaknesses and provided the following recommendations:

  • The school needs to improve the attainment of students in middle school for all subjects, including Arabic as a second language (ASL) and UAE Social Studies. For this purpose, the school needs to build successfully integrated learning support (ILS) and implement opportunities for collaboration and teamwork. ISC Abu Dhabi can also ensure that the lesson plans fully develop the reading and writing skills of students studying ASL. Furthermore, teachers must increase the difficulty of lessons for UAE social studies.
  • It should make provisions for more-able students to reach their full potential. For this purpose, teachers can focus on long-term planning and incorporate individualised activities for such students.
  • The International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi also needs to develop opportunities for all to take part in creative and practical works. For this purpose, the school needs to review the lesson planning to incorporate practical and creative tasks.
