COVID-19 Protocols

KHDA has issued a revised set of protocols once the Ministry of Education decided to reopen schools for the academic year 2021-2022. Most COVID-19 protocols remain the same with slight modifications considering the current health and safety situation in Dubai. The revised COVID-19 protocols are as follows:

  • COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory for students and staff members. Employees eligible for the vaccine but who are not interested will have to submit a negative PCR test result every week. Unlike schools in Abu Dhabi, students are not obliged to submit negative PCR test results.
  • All students must physically return to school by October 3. The remote learning programme will be offered to students that show a relevant medical certificate issued by the Dubai Health Authority. Schools can switch to distance learning if a positive COVID-19 case is identified.
  • Parents can now pick up and drop off their children from the classroom if the school allows. However, schools should ensure that parents do not have access to other facilities on campus.
  • Moreover, KHDA has reduced the minimum physical distance to 1 metre. However, schools should continue to take precautions by maintaining a safe distance. Staff members and students above six years old should wear a mask at all times.
  • Schools are now allowed to conduct swimming and sports lessons, holiday camps, extracurricular activities, after-school clubs and catering services under strict health and safety measures. Schools must clean and sanitise the changing and sports areas after each group of children.
  • Students are asked to enter the specific gates wearing facemasks. The school has to check their temperatures at the entry points. Students with body temperatures over 37.5-degree centigrade are not allowed to enter. They will be sent home with their parents.

For more information, read the detailed COVID-19 protocols and guidelines issued by KHDA.

The following is the curriculum for all stages at Hartland International School:

Foundation Stage Curriculum

The education programme designed for the foundation stage offers education in a fun, caring and stimulating environment. For this purpose, it follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. EYFS is a popular framework used by many international schools to develop necessary skills among young learners. It targets the following learning areas:

  • Expressive arts and design
  • Physical Development
  • Knowledge and understanding the world
  • Physical development
  • Mathematics
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy

Along with children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm, the aforementioned seven areas of learning help them build a range of skills. To help young learners understand concepts, the school uses the ‘play and learn’ method. In this method, the school uses its indoor and outdoor play areas to great effect. Foundation Stage curriculum also includes specialised subjects, such as Arabic, moral education and social studies.

Primary Stage Curriculum

In the primary stage, the school introduces students to a formalised and structured educational programme based on the National Curriculum of the UK. In KS1, class and specialised teachers challenge students to expand their thinking capabilities across all areas of the curriculum. The contextual style of teaching further supports learning, ensuring that students can relate the learned concepts to real-life situations.

From the primary stage, the school focuses on building proficiency in speaking multiple languages. It considers learning multiple languages as necessary to be an active part of the international community. Besides Arabic and English, students also learn French, German, Mandarin and Spanish from Year 2 onwards. Students also get to explore their imagination by engaging in extensive performance and creative art activities.

Here, a personalised approach to learning is followed that helps bridge the student’s weak points for secondary education.

Secondary Stage Curriculum

The secondary stage curriculum focuses on holistic and all-round education, combining academic syllabus with enrichment opportunities. It focuses on building independent learning skills, confidence and resilience to help students succeed in after-school life. KHDA evaluates the school and offers judgement based on a six-point scale: outstanding, very good, good, acceptable, weak and very weak.

KHDA 6-point scale
KHDA’s rating system explained

In its latest inspection for 2019-20, KHDA rated Hartland International School as ‘very good’. The school was first inspected in 2017 and maintained good rating for two consecutive years.

YearsKHDA Rating
2017-2019 Good
2019-2020 Very Good

  • Strong progress made by students in English, mathematics and science across all phases of education
  • A dynamic curriculum that meets the needs of students
  • Strong leadership and their relationship with parents and the wider community
