Masdar City will be the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste city powered by renewable energy.

Masdar City intends to expand over the next decade. The cities planners hope to have 40,000 people living there, and 50,000 people commuting to work in the city by the end of 2025.

Mubadala Development Company

Masdar City is an ecology project in Abu Dhabi which started construction in 2008. It was designed by Foster and Partners and built by Masdar, a subsidiary of the Mubadala Development Company, which in turn is a state-owned holding company of the Abu Dhabi government.

Since inception in 2006, Masdar has been a pioneer in clean energy, and today it is active in more than 40 countries, having invested or committed to invest in projects with a total value of over US$30 billion. The combined capacity of these projects is more than 20 GW – enough to power 5.25 million homes. The gigawatt (GW) is equal to one billion (10 9 ) watts or 1 gigawatt = 1000 megawatts (MW)

Masdar City relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources but its unique construction allows for the temperature in the streets to be between 15 and 20°C, much cooler than the desert climate. It is powered by a 54-acre field with 87,777 solar panels, and movement sensors have reduced electricity and water consumption by more than half. The project has gained the support of global organisations such as World Wide Fund for Nature, BioRegional and Greenpeace.

Masdar City is a mixed-use project in Abu Dhabi built by Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company. Established in 2006, the area is designed to become a sustainable urban community. The development of the first six buildings in Masdar City has long seen fruition but a portion of the area is still under development. The community is planned to be a home of approximately 50,000 people and 1,500 companies that will specialise in environmentally friendly products.
The planned community relies completely on solar energy and involves maximum utilisation of renewable energy for community operations leading to a clean, healthy environment. This urban community strategically combines residential and business complexes, proving to be a popular investment opportunity.
On the far south-east side of the emirate, situated 17 km away from central Abu Dhabi, Masdar City enjoys a location right next to the airport. It lies close to major leisure attractions of the emirate including Ferrari World and Yas Island, simultaneously sharing the borders with the well-established residential area of Abu Dhabi – Khalifa City. Its connectivity to roads is ideal, as Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, Al Rawafid Street and Al Ishoush Street all envelope the area, connecting it directly to Abu Dhabi Al Shahama Road (E10).
Masdar City Abu Dhabi is also popular amongst investors, as seen in Bayut’s Annual Market Report for Abu Dhabi 2019. It’s placed fifth in terms of the most popular areas to buy apartments.
