In the latest coronavirus UAE update, the government has announced to shut down all universities and schools in the UAE, for a month. This is a precautionary measure taken to contain the coronavirus outbreak in the country .
CORONAVIRUS UAE UPDATE: SCHOOLS CLOSED FOR A MONTH
The decision came from the Ministry of Education, clearly stating that universities and schools in the UAE will remain closed for a month, starting March 8, 2020. The two-week spring break scheduled to start on March 29, 2020 will now begin from March 8 and continue for two weeks until March 21.
DISTANT LEARNING PROGRAMME
The academic calendar will resume from March 22, 2020. However, the UAE school closure will continue till April 5, 2020. To ensure no loss of learning for the kids, all government schools will run the “Learn from Afar” home teaching programme from March 22 to April 5, 2020.
Private schools were also instructed to launch their distance learning programmes using e-learning tools like ClassDojo, Google Classroom and Seesaw to ensure no school days are wasted.
The officials from the Ministry of Education also specified that schools must prepare their students and staff for the distant learning programme, ahead of the UAE school closure. It must be ensured that all students are technically and physically equipped to participate in these learning programmes.
For virtual classrooms to be successful, students need a study space, a computer or a smart device, interactive material and a sound internet connection. While most students do have computers and/or smart tablets at home, it’s the schools’ responsibility to ensure that their internet connection and bandwidth is strong enough to accommodate live streaming and a virtual classroom set up.
SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES TO BE STERILISED
While the UAE schools are closed, the government will carry out a sterilisation programme in all private and public schools, universities and school buses to clean and disinfect them from possible Covid-19 risks.
That’s all we have for you now. It is important to state here that coronavirus in the UAE is still not an epidemic. The shutting down of schools and universities in the UAE is simply a precautionary measure to restrict the threat of contagion.
