Sharjah Institute of Technology opened in September 2003 under the instruction of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Institute offers UK based vocational qualifications. The programs of study are specifically designed to provide the students with the knowledge and practical skills required to satisfy the needs of the U.A.E. Job market. Certified by Edexcel (BTEC) and the City and Guilds of London the qualifications are recognized worldwide. The UK education system is highly respected throughout the world for rigorously applied standards of quality, regulated by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), the UK government body responsible for the development, accreditation, assessment and certification of qualifications other than university degrees.

UK awarding bodies like BTEC and City and Guilds are committed to ensuring the absolute integrity of their qualifications. They work closely with the QCA to continually review their performance against the QCA quality assurance criteria to ensure that standards are rigorously maintained. Both BTEC and City and Guilds have their own standards boards that maintain and improve standards. This allows for the development of stringent quality standards, assures the respect and confidence of international schools, colleges and universities, governments, employers and educationalists alike. Both awarding bodies are governed by their respective committees of prominent educational and business professionals who take a strong interest in the international transferability of qualifications.

All UK vocationally related qualifications are designed to prepare students for the world of work and further study. The qualifications achieved are proven passports to a career and are an excellent opportunity to achieve that vital edge in employment; they are real qualifications for the real world. There is a great deal of common ground between BTEC and City and Guilds. However, City and Guilds tend to offer rather more specific trade-based qualifications, very often requiring the demonstration of occupational competences. BTEC qualifications are broader, with a greater emphasis upon underlying principles in addition to applications of technology. The SIT Foundation Programs is designed to allow new students to benefit from the acquisition of the basic skills required for progression into the various vocational areas.
Curriculum / Programs
As the basic language of tuition is English, a high proportion of the first semester is taken up with the study of 'Technical English'. The Second Semester is now designed to provide the student with the opportunity to gain experience in the use of additional practical skills.
