Latifa School for Girls - (State)
|
The School has an established reputation for academic excellence and individualized attention to students' needs. Every teacher is expected to: encourage high standards in all aspects of school life, contribute to the effective and efficient management of the School, promote a school culture which is happy, purposeful and productive, support and motivate students, teachers and other school employees, encourage consultation and discussion.
LSG is a day school for girls between the ages of 3 and 18 occupying 2 adjacent sites. The School has a largely UK-educated staff of around 130: this includes a number of Arab members of staff who teach Arabic and Islamic Studies. LSG offers a comprehensive range of subjects leading to GCSE, AS and A level. Key Skills and non-examination courses are offered to girls in Year 12. The School regularly places girls in Oxford and Cambridge yet also educates girls who have significant learning difficulties. The School remains committed to providing a first-class education to all its students, whatever their abilities.
The Secondary organizational structure, on the professional side, incorporates the senior management team (SMT), heads of department and heads of year. The SMT comprises the Headmistress, Deputy Headmistress, Senior Teacher and Head of Primary. The SMT plus team includes an addition of 2 secondary staff representatives. Whilst heads of department are primarily concerned with academic matters and heads of year with pastoral, there is clearly an overlap between the two; all staff are expected to work together in the best interests of the students. There is also a careers officer and two examination officers. The Primary organizational structure, on the professional side, incorporates the primary leadership team (PLT) and Key Stage Subject Coordinators. The PLT comprises of the Headmistress, Head of Primary, KS1 and KS2 Coordinators. The PLT plus team includes the Literacy, Numeric and Arabic Coordinators in each Key Stage as well as the Learning Support Coordinator.

In the Primary School we teach a modified version of the English National Curriculum which is of greater relevance to our pupils. In Nursery and Reception we base our curriculum on the Foundation Stage document, which has been designed for children between the ages of 3 and 5. Most of the activities and learning opportunities at this age are play-based, as we believe that it is through play that young children learn best.Key Stage 1 marks the beginning of more formal education. Girls will be reading, writing, counting, adding and subtracting, measuring, exploring and extending what they know about themselves and the world. They will also have specialist lessons in music, P.E. and I.C.T. Almost without exception our pupils speak English as their second language. We believe that the rapid acquisition of English is of the greatest importance, so we place a heavy emphasis on teaching children correct English, beginning with their first days in the Nursery class. We also have a TEFL teacher who works with all classes, and with small groups of girls who need extra support.
Throughout the Primary school, Arabic and Islamic Studies form an important part of our curriculum. Girls have daily Arabic lessons, and Islamic Studies lessons twice a week. In KS2 the Core subjects of numeric, literacy and Arabic pupils are set in ability groups. This enables all girls to develop and progress according to their individual needs. Science, art, history and geography are taught in class groups while specialist teachers provide music, P.E. and ICT within their department facilities. We also provide learning support in small groups in numeric, literacy and Arabic. A TEFL teacher integrates TEFL into literacy lessons. Pupils are assessed on a regular basis to monitor progress towards meeting the standards required for entry into the senior school.
We provide a range of extra curricular activities within the school day to encourage social skills. Pupils are taught to respect one another and to always strive to do their best. Prefects are assigned in Year 6 with the purpose of developing skills of responsibility. Senior School Girls enter at age 11 both from Latifa's Primary Department and from other schools. The National Curriculum is followed throughout the Senior School, and additional choices are also made available. Latifa offers a broad range of GCSE subjects. Results are excellent when compared with those achieved by schools in the United Kingdom - over 57% of our students attain grades A or A plus at GCSE level. The Sixth Form curriculum, taught in a modern, purpose-built block, has two thrusts. For those girls intending to proceed to tertiary education in the United Kingdom or the United States, the following Advanced level and AS level subjects are offered: English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Arabic, History, Geography and Art and Design. Results are excellent.
The second thrust in Latifa's Sixth Form is designed for students from local families who prefer to remain in the U.A.E. for tertiary studies. These girls normally take a smaller number of Advanced level subjects, as well as additional GCSEs. All pupils in the Sixth Form take Key Skills.
The School's careers program begins in Year 9, when parents and students are actively engaged in discussions leading to the choice of GCSE options. In Year 11 girls are interviewed about their post-GCSE intentions, and in Year 12 the careers staff offer guidance on the choice of university. Early in Year 13 assistance is provided with the completion of university entrance forms and mock interviews are conducted. The careers program benefits from a library of specialized literature, the use of software programs and the internet. Outside speakers, including former students, are brought in to discuss their own career choices and experiences.
