The English College - (Private)
|
We aim to give each child the best level of education possible, not just in academic training, but also in terms of character formation, developing the whole personality and awakening new interests, so that when our students leave school we can expect them to become effective, happy and responsible members of society.
Basic to our values is our abiding belief in human worth. Our focus is always on potential: to help students to discover and appreciate their own uniqueness and value, while providing an environment where there is freedom and order, and a balance between the needs of the individual and those of the community.
Curriculum / Programs
Years 7 to 9Throughout Years 7, 8 and 9 students follow a wide range of courses which provide a broad and challenging curriculum, based upon the British National Curriculum Key Stage Three programs of study. The subjects currently being studied at this level are: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French, Arabic, Art and Design, Information and Communication Technology, Drama, Music and Physical Education.
Year 7 students are placed in classes designed to allow a smooth and effective transition from primary to secondary school. Consequently, many subjects are taught in mixed ability groups in Year 7, although some setting does take place in French and Arabic. In Years 8 and 9 many subjects introduce a setting structure based on ability. Setting enables students to work at a pace best suited to them and movement between sets is facilitated. In this way, late developers have a chance to go forward and those of the highest ability are encouraged to reach their fullest potential. The Enhanced Studies Department supports the curriculum. Appropriate programs are, where necessary, designed and tailored by specialists to help students with special learning needs to maximize their potential at both ends of the spectrum.
Years 10 and 11
Careful guidance is given in Year 9 to enable students to choose a balanced course for their Year 10 and 11. All students take a common core of subjects consisting of English, Mathematics, Co-ordinate Science (double award), generally a language (French or Arabic) and Physical Education. In addition, three further subjects, from a range on offer, which includes Art and Design, Business Studies, Economics, Information and Communication Technology, Drama, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education this year. The majority of students also have the opportunity of following a further examination course in English Literature.
