Gulf Arabic Program - (Private)
|
Learn the spoken Gulf dialect of Arabic using a variety of methods and materials fitting a variety of learning styles. The emphasis is on communicating in Arabic with both fluency and accuracy. Local native Arabic speakers teach the everyday vocabulary and common expressions that they themselves would use, within a framework that teaches you to express yourself as Arabs would express themselves.
Learn to read and write the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) using the acclaimed Al-Kitaab series published by Georgetown University Press and developed at Middlebury College. Mix with your Arab friends and neighbors on a regular basis practicing the language and building relationships with local people.
Curriculum / Programs
Full-Time Arabic Course:In addition to the full-time course (described below) GAP also offers a one month Summer Intensive Programme. We are also able to offer alternative summer programmers and night or part-time classes (throughout the year) on request.
The full-time programme is designed to take-in students who know nothing of the Arabic language and equip them to become competent communicators able to live, work and build relationships within the medium of the Arabic language. We can also receive those who have previously studied Arabic, please contact us for more details.
The full course consists of four eighteen-week modules over a period of at least two years. Classes are held five days a week, (Sunday to Thursday) with 3.5 hours of class time each morning, making a course module of 315 hours. In addition to the class time, students are also expected to spend time divided between ‘community learning’ (spending time with local people) and private study (practicing and preparing for classes), averaging four hours a day. The proportion of community learning will increase as the course progresses. This is a programme not merely an institute and one cannot learn Arabic solely in the classroom.
Summer Programme:
In addition to the one-month Summer Intensive Programme (described below) GAP also offers a full-time programme. We are also able to offer alternative summer programmers and night or part-time classes (throughout the year) on request.
The Intensive Summer Programme is described below, with a general description followed by Accommodation Details, class schedules, Costs and Payment Conditions.
Every summer we offer a one-month intensive course in colloquial Gulf Arabic. This takes place in July. For the summer of *2011 this will be from Sunday, June 26th until Thursday, July 21st.
This course is for (almost) beginners. We require that students be able to read, write, pronounce and recognise the characters of the Arabic script before they arrive. We have placed this requirement on applicants because it is possible for students to acquire this familiarity at home using one of the many 'Teach Yourself' courses and it allows us to move straight into teaching the language. To help students see if they are sufficiently competent in the script to benefit from the course we have devised a self-assessment.
This course concentrates on the spoken Arabic so no Modern Standard Arabic is taught. If you are interested in verbal communication with Gulf Arabs and with developing your speaking and listening skills then this course is for you. If you are interested in improving your reading and writing skills then it is not.
Local native speakers will teach you everyday vocabulary and common expressions used by Arabic speakers in this part of the world, within a framework that teaches you to express yourself as Arabs would express themselves.
Other Programmes:
In addition to our full-time programme and one-month intensive programme in July, we are also able to offer alternative summer programmers and night or part-time classes (throughout the year) on request. These are described below.
Other Summer Programmers:
No set summer programme is organized apart from the Iintensive Summer Programme. However, in the past, we have organized several private classes customized to the needs of a group of students or a single individual. If you have some spare time next summer and would like to study with some friends or on your own, why not contact us to discuss the possibility of a private class.
Night Or Part-Time Classes Outside The Summer:
The Gulf Arabic Programme does not currently offer set night or part-time classes during normal term time. However, we run a number of private night classes. If you and a group of friends wish to study together or even if you wish to organize one-on-one tutorials then we can offer courses for a range of abilities. We are able to offer Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial Gulf Arabic for any level, including specific listening/comprehension, conversational, reading or writing classes for the more advanced
