College of Humanities and Social Science - (State)

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences was one of the first four colleges established in the University. It was then called the College of Arts. Classes began in the academic year 1977 - 1978.The College has since undergone rapid development and has grown significantly, from 174 students in that first year to over 4000 today. During the same period the number of faculty members grew from 18 to over 170. The academic departments were reorganized in 1994, expanding gradually to 12. Currently the College is divided into sixteen academic programs.

“Our vision is to be an internationally-recognized college providing high-quality academic programs and innovative research in a vibrant campus environment that prepares graduates through an interdisciplinary and bilingual liberal education to become independent, resourceful, and enterprising citizens, well prepared professionals, leaders in government, business, civil society, and family life, and shapers of the future of the United Arab Emirates.” The college offers various thematic application courses that provide our undergraduates with a range of learning opportunities across disciplines, thus freeing students from more traditional academic orientations housed in various departments.

It is envisaged that all these thematic applications contain or are followed by an internship or practicum, where students apply their skills and understanding in a work situation prior to graduation. By such a program the College prepares its graduates for a rapidly changing society and provides the skills and knowledge that equips its graduates to function successfully in their local communities, in the new knowledge economy and enables them to make a contribution to their communities, the nation and beyond.
