Nakheel Drains Six Swimming Pools At Marina Residences In Palm JumeirahThursday, June 21, 2012
According to the latest news, Nakheel has drained out Palm pools over its service fees rows with the owners of property in Palm Jumeirah. It has drained out six swimming pools at Marina Residences Towers during last week. Nakheel claims property owners owe it AED 15 m service charges which led it to take this action. Tenants, who are not the property owners and are thus not liable to pay service charges, are the ones getting most affected from this action.
As a result of this action, a general wave of discontentment has spread among the residents. Speculations have spread that if service charges would not be paid, Nakheel would also shut down other facilities like elevators and gyms in the development.
Nakheel’s battle started with the owners when it banned 1300 residents to access beaches and gyms at Shoreline Apartments residences last December. The debt ridden developer at that time claimed AED 72 million in service charges still pending by the property owners. Nakheel was hit hard by global financial crises which led it to write down the value of its assets at US $ 21 bn. The decision of banning residents from various development facilities has been criticized heavily.
Khalaf Al Habtoor, the chairman of Al Habtoor Group, opposed this decision and claimed that Dubai government did not approve it. He further added that if he buys property and later on he comes to know about the charges for using the beach, it’s not only abnormal but is also spoiling the reputation of the country.
He also highlighted that he is 100% sure that the higher authorities have not accepted it and it is not even in their notice. They are not making money for the government which some of them show but only damaging its reputation over few dirham.
